Peña Nieto visits city for first time as president

Enrique Peña Nieto has made his first visit to Guadalajara as president of Mexico to head a meeting on pensions at the Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

On Thursday, Peña Nieto was accompanied by Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval and the federal Social Development Secretary Rosario Robles, who announced plans to expand pension coverage to another 2.6 million elderly beneficiaries. Peña Nieto described this as an act of social justice and Robles added that she expects to reach universal coverage for seniors in Mexico by the end of 2013.

Peña Nieto later returned to Mexico City, from where he was due to fly to Caracas, Venezuela to attend the funeral of President Hugo Chavez who died of cancer on Tuesday.
