Another chapter in the fiercest rivalry in Mexican soccer unfolds on Sunday, March 31, when the Guadalajara Chivas host Club America from the capital at the city’s Omnilife Stadium.  The charged atmosphere at the these games is like no other; fans line up for hours to purchase coveted tickets.  Sunday’s game, which kicks off at 5 p.m., is sure to be a sell-out and will not be broadcast live on free-to-air television – only for Sky subscribers. However, dozens of bars and restaurants in Jalisco will be showing the game, making for the perfect (or imperfect, depending on which team you support) end to the week-long Easter holiday.

Passion Play

Next week, residents of San Martin de las Flores, a small community in Tlaquepaque, will stage their annual Judea, or Passion Play. The three-day event recreates the trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The commemoration has been a tradition in San Martin for 200 years, although it was interrupted by the anti-clerical movement of the early 1900s. Attendance at the Passion Play grows each year. Past crowds have reached 100,000, making the pageant the second biggest after the one in Iztapalapa (in Mexico City). The event attracts visitors from all over Mexico, the United States, Europe and Asia.

The Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) will hold open days for the public on Sundays at its base/college located in Zapopan.

The Base Aérea Militar will open its doors from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a program that it is calling “Paseos Dominicales.”  

The tours of the base may be made either on foot or non-motorized transport (i.e. bicycle).  A range of aircraft will be on display and the college band will perform.

Oscar Night Party

The American Society (Amsoc) Oscar Night Party held on Sunday, February 24 saw guests bring appetizers to show off their culinary skills and compete for the three top prizes.  This food fest included crabmeat dip, chicken salad, eggplant and cheese spread, and nachos, to name a few.  The top three prizes went to Franklin Dunne, Bette Drummond and Irma Robledo.  Their winning entries were mango smoothies, spicy sweet cocktail meatballs and deviled ham spread, respectively.  The prizes were a CD of the Oscar-nominated songs and various candies.
