The Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) will hold open days for the public on Sundays at its base/college located in Zapopan.

The Base Aérea Militar will open its doors from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a program that it is calling “Paseos Dominicales.”

The tours of the base may be made either on foot or non-motorized transport (i.e. bicycle).  A range of aircraft will be on display and the college band will perform.

The decision to open up the base to the public has been taken as the Mexican Air Force marks its 100th anniversary.

The base is located at Avenida Base Aérea Militar 5, Zapopan. It is situated three kilometers outside the north-western Periferico (city beltway), and can be reached via Avenida Aviacion (via the Guadalajara-Tepic highway, the extension of the Avenida Vallarta) or the Guadalajara-Testistan highway  (Avenida Gil Preciado, the extension of Avenida Los Laureles).

Hair & beauty expo

Acclaimed hair stylist Marvin Young, among many others, will be on stage at the 11th Expo Belleza Internacional de Occidente (hair and beauty industry expo) scheduled Sunday, June 2 and Monday, June 3 at Expo Guadalajara.

Last year’s event, considered Mexico’s leading beauty expo, attracted 32,000 visitors, and generated direct sales of 125 million pesos, according to organizers.

The expo showcases more than 200 companies promoting their hair and beauty products and services, and uses 20,000 square meters of floor space.

Expect to find the latest trends in makeup products, colorimetry, hair extensions, nails, tools, hair and body products, beauty salon furniture and more.

Tickets cost 200 pesos for one day, and 260 pesos for both days. They can be purchased online at www.ebio.mx, where further information about the event can be found (also in English).

U.S. conductor back in town

American conductor Leslie Dunner (right) returns to Guadalajara this week to take the baton for a May Cultural Festival performance by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra at the Degoalldo Theater on Friday, May 24, 8:30 p.m.  With him is the invited soloist, French pianist Francois-Frederic Guy.

Acoustic shell reopens

The iconic Concha Acusitca (outdoor acoustic sound shell) in Guadalajara’s Agua Azul Park is about to reopen after a nine-month renovation.

Once a popular performance space, the shell had been inactive for many years before Guadalajara city hall last year decided to pay for a makeover.

So far, they have plowed 16.5 million pesos into revamping the space. This includes the installation of a new stage, toilets and wash basins, as well as lighting equipment.

The shell’s audience area can seat around 6,000 people.

As well as concerts and dance shows, city hall plans to use the shell for theatrical and children’s performances.

The Concha Acustica was designed by noted local architect Alejandro Zohn in 1959.

The shell will be inaugurated on Saturday, June 1 with a rock concert, Rock al Parque.
