ASA

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will meet Monday, September 2, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (Calle 16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic).

Anita Lee will talk about her experience of spending three and a half months in artist residences in Europe. She will provide information on what artist residences are, their locations, how to find them and their cost. Artist residences are usually open to creative spirits of all genres, including visual and digital artists, writers, photographers, dancers, musicians and multimedia producers.

ASA is a group of about 100 artists, foreign and Mexican that meets the first Monday of each month to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area. All are welcome.

Art for peace

Selected works from the International Art Show for Peace in Mexico, “Losing Count,” will remain on display at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic until September 4, while the other half of the traveling exhibit is showcased through the same date at Jocotepec’s Casa de la Cultura.

The collection of 120 works created by 80 artists of different nationalities as commentary on Mexico’s violent drug war was put together by the Transcultural Matrix Project for an itinerant show that opened two years ago in San Francisco, California. It exhibited in Mexico City and Zacatecas before coming to lakeside, and will go next to Zapopan, prior to Monterrey and Tijuana.

Globo workshop

With Ajijic’s traditional Globo Regatta on the calendar for September 14, Lakeside Presbyterian Church has scheduled a two-day hands-on workshop on the art and craft of building the colorful tissue paper hot-air balloons.

Sessions will be held August 27 and 28 at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231, Riberas del Pilar, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant. For complete details call (376) 766-1404.

Free fall jazz

Three talented Mexican musicians return to Piano Rojo after a two-month hiatus to honor their fans with a performance of jazz classics from Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, and Garner and Burke, Thelonius Monk, Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Edith Piaf and more.

Jazz singer and artist Jaramar Soto has been performing for more than two decades while producing 11 albums. She teams up with guitarist Alejandro Alfaro, acclaimed as a musician, composer and arranger in both the jazz and popular music genres, and bassist Eliud Ernandes, who has been active as musical director in various theater presentations and collaborated with top rock, jazz and gospel musicians in Mexico. Jaramar says her vocal influences are Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Cassandra Wilson.

Hear them Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31, 7 or 9 p.m. at El Piano Rojo (Morelos 14, Ajijic). Tickets are on pre-sale for 120 pesos at Diane Pearl.

Mistaken identity

Apologies to Cassandra Rodriguez who was erroneously identified as Molly Johnson in a photo that appeared in last week’s edition of the Reporter. The University of Guadalajara medical student is an amateur vocalist who sang with Big Band Jazz Guadalajara at an August 11 performance at the Auditorio de la Ribera. And while we’re on the subject, the band received at standing ovation after raising the rafters with a selection of U.S. and Latin American jazz tunes for an appreciative and largely expat audience. Acclaimed professional singer Johnson will appear at a two-day jazz concert series coming to Ajijic next January.
