El Clasico

Another chapter in the fiercest rivalry in Mexican soccer unfolds on Sunday, March 31, when the Guadalajara Chivas host Club America from the capital at the city’s Omnilife Stadium.  The charged atmosphere at the these games is like no other; fans line up for hours to purchase coveted tickets.  Sunday’s game, which kicks off at 5 p.m., is sure to be a sell-out and will not be broadcast live on free-to-air television – only for Sky subscribers. However, dozens of bars and restaurants in Jalisco will be showing the game, making for the perfect (or imperfect, depending on which team you support) end to the week-long Easter holiday.

Tennis tournament

The third edition of the Jalisco Open tennis tournament will take place from Monday, April 8 to Saturday, April 13 at the Telcel Tennis Center in the Parque Metropolitano.

Part of the ATP Challenger Tour, the tournament pits 32 professional male tennis players against one another in three-set games on the center’s hard courts, with prize money of 100,000 dollars up for grabs.   There’s also a doubles event, featuring 16 pairs.

The biggest star in this year’s field will be Nicolas Massu from Chile. Although the 33-year-old is currently low in the ATP rankings, Massu ia a former world number nine in singles, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. He is the only male player to have won both the singles and doubles gold medals during the same games (in 1988).

Confirmed participants from the United States are Rajeev Ram (ranked 104th the in the world) and Bobby Reynolds (152th). Canada’s Vasek Pospisil (129th) is also playing.

Last year’s event was won by Brazil’s Thiago Alves.

Tickets cost from 30 to 100 pesos and are available from Ticketmaster.com.mx.

May Festival

Preparations for another May Cultural Festival are in full swing, with this year’s invited country, France, already announcing some of the artists who will appear on local stages.  The Malandain Ballet Biarritz will inaugurate the festival at the Teatro Degollado on May 9, and give two other presentations of different works on May 11 and 12. French jazz great Jean Luc Ponty and his band will close out the festival.

Wine Festival

Guadalajara will host the first Festival of Mexican Wine (FEVINO) from June 3 to 8. Over 30 Mexican winemakers will be showcasing their produce through sales and tastings, while there will also be dinners, lectures and workshops throughout the festival.

There will be a special tasting event with food and live music at La Gotera events hall in the countryside near Pinar de la Venta, just outside Guadalajara, on Thursday, June 6 from 4 p.m. and Friday June 7 from 2 p.m. Tickets cost 350 pesos in advance on 450 pesos on the day. They will be available from Ticketmaster, the Grupo Ochoa offices in Guadalajara and from Vinisfera.com

There will also be tastings, gourmet meals and other activities at selected restaurants and other venues across the city throughout the week. For more information visit www.fevimo.mx.
