If Tlaquepaque is too far off your regular beat, you can see 36 of the finest ceramics created in Mexico during the past three decades at the Centro Cultural Las Aguilas, located at Lopez Mateos 5003, next to TV Azteca’s studios.

The pieces are from ten Mexican states and have been lent to Zapopan by the National Ceramics Museum (Pantaleon Panduro) in Tlaquepaque. Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., free entry. Call (33) 3631-7897 for more information.

Paleontology Museum

Take a tour of Guadalajara’s Paleontology Museum along with the musical group Eros Ensamble on Sunday, June 23.  As well as the musical interludes, you will hear explanations of Jalisco’s prehistoric animals. Mainly aimed at kids, the talks should be of interest to grown-ups too. There are two tours, at noon and 1 p.m.  Entrance at Calzada Independencia Sur 973, across from Agua Azul Park. Cost: 16 pesos adults, children under 12 free.

Casa Huichol

Guadalajara’s Casa Huichol, which provides shelter and assistance to Jalisco’s indigenous Wixarita people when they travel to Guadalajara for medical treatment, has celebrated its 30th birthday with a fundraising auction and concert.

The money will be spent on improving the facility for the 20-plus families who turn up at its doors each month.

The center’s founder Rocio Echeverria, a trained nurse, encourages the Huicholes to pursue their famous craft and beadwork and helps them sell their pieces.

For more information about how you can support this valuable organization with either time of money, call Echeverria at (33) 3126-7674.

Ceramics

President Enrique Peña Nieto will seek to shine some gloss on the work of Mexican ceramists when he breezes into Tlaquepaque on June 28 to announce the winners of the Premio Nacional de la Ceramica (National Ceramics Prize).

Prize money of 1.15 million pesos includes a top award of 125,000 pesos. Many of the works in the competition will subsequently be exhibited in Tlaquepaque.

Wedding Expo

If there’s a wedding any time in your future (or you just like weddings) then you should check out Expo Tu Boda, scheduled at Expo Guadalajara on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30.  Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days. The entry fee is 150 pesos for one or two days.
