Fines for phoning while driving in Jalisco among lowest in nation

Jalisco drivers caught talking with cellphone in hand could soon face stronger punishments, as state authorities seek to boost road safety.

Studies show that 12 percent of traffic accidents and 25 percent of road deaths in Mexico City are caused by drivers distracted by talking on cellphones. For that reason, the fine for such a violation of traffic laws in the capital has been upped to a hefty 1,493 pesos. In Monterrey the fine is 605 pesos, but in Jalisco, where it is all too common to see drivers chatting away on their phones, transgressors are hit up for a mere 181 pesos.

An increased deterrent “is the only way we can stop this problem,” said Miguel Castro of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) who will serve as the party’s coordinator in the incoming State Legislature.
