Peña Nieto among most followed leaders on Twitter

Mexico’s new President Enrique Peña Nieto is the world’s ninth most popular leader on social networking site Twitter, according to a study by the Digital Policy Council from December 2012.

The organization, which aims to “provide analyses on world leaders and institutions of government employing social media outlets to discover how they govern and connect with their citizenry,” found that 75 percent of the world’s heads of state use the microblogging site, up from 42 percent in 2011.

U.S. President Barack Obama is the most popular leader, with 24 million followers, up 15 million on 2011. Obama’s election night message of “Four more years,” accompanied by a photo of himself and the First Lady became the most retweeted tweet of all time in November.

Venezuela’s cancer-stricken President Hugo Chavez is at number two, with 3.8 million followers, followed by the leaders of Turkey, Jordan, Russia, Brazil and Colombia. Peña Nieto is ranked ninth, with 1.4 million followers, more than French President Francois Hollande or British Prime Minister David Cameron.
