IMSS needs more federal funds

In order to resolve a mounting budget deficit, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) requires an additional 62.8 billion pesos annually for the next five years.

In a report on IMSS finances in 2011-2012, the government agency, which covers health, pensions and social security, suggested increased federal funds should cover 91 percent of what is needed.  This would mean the federal government paying an extra 58 billion pesos a year from 2013 to 2017. This would be equal to the government’s entire expenditure on its Seguro Popular health program, or double the budget of the country’s largest public university, the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The IMSS says it could obtain the remaining nine percent by hiking fees for family insurance.
