Mexico’s youth awakens

The return of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has provoked the biggest political awakening of Mexico’s youth since the late 1960s. If they can organize themselves efficiently and strike alliances with other disaffected sectors of society, the students that comprise the #YoSoy132 movement could play a vital role as a national watchdog and a catalyst for reform.

Whatever criticisms may be raised against them, the students cannot be accused of shying away from daunting challenges. Rallying against the behemothic and authoritarian PRI, they are also taking on media giants such as Televisa, while the Jalisco branch of #YoSoy132 even has the “mafia elite” running the University of Guadalajara in its sights.
