Dec. 21 calamity: Bunk, yes, but scientists will address concerns

Anyone suffering from doubts or nerves about the so-called “December 21 apocalypse prophecy” are free to consult the rational astronomers and scientists from the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG).

A team of researchers will make themselves available for questions at the university’s Instituto de Astronomia y Meteorologia (IAM)  from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 21.

Many doomsday theorists have claimed the world will end on 11.11 a.m. on December 21, when the Mayan calendar ends a 5,125-year-long cycle.

But as NASA points out, this is just a transitional date.  “Just as your calendar begins again on January 1 — another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar,” notes NASA on its web site.

NASA continues: “Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than four billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.”

NASA says it has been forced to enter the issue due to the massive demand for clarification from the general  public.

UdeG solar physicist Ruben Bautista Navarro says the only notable thing about December 21 will be the solstice marking the first day of winter.

Bautista said contrary to many reports there will be no planetary alignments on December 21.

Says NASA: “Even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible.”

NASA has also ruled out any chance of Earth being hit by a comet  or asteroid on December 21, or the possibility of a giant solar storm.

The IAM is located at Avenida Vallarta 2602 (one block from the city’s arches). For more information call (33) 3615-9829.
