Water to cost more as city drops subsidies for high users

Many householders in the Guadalajara metropolitan area will pay more for their H2O in 2013 after the water utility this week approved a series of hikes.

From next year bills will more realistically reflect the actual cost of water, since they will no longer be laced with subsidies that Guadalajara residents have traditionally received.

The tariff committee of the Intermunicipal Water and Sewage Authority (SIAPA) approved increases of between 15 to 63 percent for consumers with monthly usage from 6,000 and 21,000 liters.  Households using less than 6,000 liters of water each month will pay the same rates.
