Peruvian writer Alfredo Bryce Echenique has been named winner of the 2012 Literary Award to be given out at Guadalajara’s International Book Fair (FIL) in November.
A jury of six renowned critics, academics and writers decided unanimously to grant Bryce the biggest literary prize in Latin America. He will receive the award and 150,000 dollars in prize money during the inauguration of the 26th FIL on November 24.
The jury described Bryce as “one of the essential figures of Latin American literature,” and an “extraordinary chronicler of life as well as of the literary and political searches of Latin Americans.”
The prize is given in recognition of lifetime achievement in any literary genre. Born into an upper-class family in Lima in 1939, Bryce authored such novels as “Un mundo para Julius,” “La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña” and “No me esperen en abril.” He explored the subjects of illness, happiness, love and sadness in these works, as well as writing many short stories, essays and articles.
Chile will be the special guest at this year’s FIL.
