Bridge donation

The Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club recently donated 9,800 pesos to the Cruz Roja Chapala. The donation was generated during the month of April, which the American Contract Bridge League designates as Charity Month. During the month a portion of each game fee paid by the members of the Bridge Club is donated to the charity that the club chooses. Club Treasurer Steve Penning and President Skip Johnson presented the check to Norm Pifer of the Red Cross, who accepted the donation and presented the Bridge Club with a certificate of appreciation.

Genealogy forum

The May meeting of the Genealogy Forum will take place Monday, May 27, 2 p.m. in the Sala at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). The meeting this month will focus on those elusive common surnames – we almost all have them – names like Smith, Jones, Brown, Garcia, Sanchez, Wilson ... ancestors painfully difficult to trace. Those attending will be watching a Webinar by popular genealogy speaker and author Lisa Louise Cook called “Google Search Strategies for Common Surnames” for new ideas on searching for these illusive ancestors.

Discover tips and tricks to find your ancestors with common surnames and surnames that double as common words in the English language with Google. Learn how to weed out irrelevant search results to save time and get to what you want faster. Then save and automate your searches to run for you! You’ll not only improve your searches, but also improve the chances that the information you post online will be found by other genealogists facilitating collaboration!  Everyone is welcome to join the forum.  For more information call Fran Murphy at 766-0067.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will observe the Feast of the Holy Trinity, 2013, on Sunday, May 26 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake, )(Carretera 10, Chula Vista, Ajijic). Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “Proper Glory,” based on John 16:12-15. Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake have a common fellowship time between their two services in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel from about 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The Lunch Bunch will gather after the fellowship time at the new Italian Restaurant in the Japanese Garden on the Carretera on the right (heading towards Jocotepec) next to a Pemex station before the state police turrets.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Winston Churchill once described Russia as “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” The same could be said of the Holy Trinity, the riddle/mystery/enigma celebrated this Sunday at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Trinity Sunday is the only Feast of the Church year that celebrates a doctrine rather than an event. The Trinity – the experience of the one God in three distinct ways – is a bed rock of Christian faith, but also the bane of Christian preachers. The Rev. Deacon Donald Snell is taking on the challenge of proclaiming this foundational understanding of what lies at the very heart of God in his sermon, “All for One and One for All.” As a bonus, almost like Oprah, Deacon Don will distribute a mystery gift to all those present at the 10 a.m. worship service. (Literary hint: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis!)  St.  Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just one block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold is continuing his series on “Meeting Jesus” in the Gospel of Mark. The message for Sunday, May 26 is “Among the Tombs,” using Mark 5:1-17 as the text. Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. The book of 1 Thessalonians is the topic of discussion in the 10 a.m. Friday morning interactive Bible study. (The Bible study is designed so you can drop in at any time – you don’t need to wait for a new book or topic to begin.) Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Center for Spiritual Living

Reverend Tim Schubert presents “Manifesting Your Highest Good” at the regular Friday night service from 5-6 p.m. at Nicolas Bravo 17. Classes continue from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, with “The Basics of Spiritual Living” and on Thursdays with “The Experience of God.”  All are welcome to join in for meditation from 10 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. before class on Thursdays. You may join the Thursday class at any time.  Be looking for our announcement of the next Spiritual Cinema, June 16.  For further information contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Beginning on May 30 at 10:30 a.m., interactive classes will begin in the fellowship room at the church. A variety of topics related to what this congregation believes and why will be covered.
