MAS

The Music Appreciation Society (MAS Musica) has announced its fall and winter schedule for 2013 and 2014.

Saturday, November 16, 7 p.m. will bring an old fashioned United Service Organizations (USO) variety show paying tribute to those who served in World War II, the Korean conflict and in Vietnam. Get in the mood with the Boogie Woogies as the Andrew Sisters and Michael Holmes as Judy Garland and more, accompanied by Mark Kahny.

Saturday, December 7, 7 p.m. sees a double-header with a piano and cello duo, “Duet de Moscu,” from the Instituto Universario de Bellas Artes of the University of Colima. The second part of the evening will feature guitarist Eduardo Leon and vocalist Jorge Acosta singing Mexican favorites.

On Saturday, January 18, 7 p.m., “Classical FX” returns from the Washington, D.C. Kennedy Center Opera Company. The program will include Broadway hits, gospel music and old standards.

On Saturday, March 8, 7 p.m., ragtime pianist Bob Milne (designated a national treasure by the U.S. Library of Congress) will be on hand playing a literal historical story of American music. Milne is returning to Lakeside due to demand by audiences, who have thoroughly enjoyed him.

Season tickets will cost 1,200 pesos for center seats for the four performances and 1,100 pesos for side aisle seats. This is a savings of 300 pesos if the tickets were purchased for individual shows.

Tickets will be sold through April 26 at Charter Club Tours and Diane Pearl Colecciones. They will also be on sale from April 15 to April 26 at the Lake Chapala Society, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take a bow

It’s time for Lakeside Little Theatre’s annual Applause Party to give a standing ovation to all those who have labored at the theater this past season. If you volunteered on stage, backstage, carrying props, doing makeup, ironing costumes, running sound or lights or just sweeping up … this party is for you.

Come and enjoy lots of good friends, free food and drink on Friday, April 5, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the theater.

ASA

Fresh from their spectacular annual Judged Show, the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will meet Monday, April 1, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (Calle 16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic). The group of about 100 artists, foreign and Mexican, meet the first Monday of each month to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area. All are welcome.

Bronze

The Ajijic Cultural Center is one step closer to being able to bronze a sculpture donated by local sculptor Miguel Miramontes, reports the center’s director Efren Gonzalez.

A recent auction raised 11,500 pesos toward the estimated 100,000-peso cost of the project.

To raise more funds, Gonzalez is giving painting demonstrations.

The one scheduled for Friday, March 29, 4 p.m. at the Cultural Center will focus on boat scenes.

On Friday April 5, 4 p.m. the subject will be market scenes.

The fee is 50 pesos. This gets you a free drink or two, as well as the demonstration. All the money will go toward the bronzing of the Miramontes sculpture.

Anyone interested in donating toward this important project can reach Gonzalez at (376) 766-5381.

New mural

Local artist Juan Navarro, who won a contest five years ago to paint a mural in the front cupola of the Ajijic Cultural Center, will finally begin the project in the first weeks of April. The mural will depict the traditions of Ajijic.

Art store

Efren Gonzalez, new head of the Ajijic Cultural Center, will open an art store at the facility to sell items by local artists and artisans. The store will be located in an unused area of the center.

Gonzalez is hopeful that the commissions obtained from sales will provide funds for workshops for the community.
