Maestros del Arte

The board of the Feria Maestros del Arte has determined this year’s date and location for the festival. The event will return to the Chapala Yacht Club for the weekend of November 15-17. Little Theatre schedule

The Lakeside Little Theatre has announced the plays for season 49 (2013-2014). They are as follows:

“Local Hero,” written and directed by Lakeside resident Neal Checkoway. It’s a modern day fable, based upon the movie of the same name. It will run from October 4 to October 13.

“The Heiress,” by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, directed by Rosann Wilshere, is a period drama and will play November 8 through November 17.

“Over The River and Through the Woods,” by Joe D. DiPietro, directed by Ann Swiston, is a comedic drama. The run is from December 5 to December 15.

“Blood Relations,” by Sharon Pollock, directed by Lynn Phelan, is a drama and will play January 17 to January 26.

“Hooray for Hollywood!,” written and directed by Lakeside resident Barbara Clippinger, is a musical running from February 21 to March 4.

“Social Security,” by Andrew Bergman, directed by Phil Shepherd, a comedy will be on the boards from March 28 to April  6.

Season tickets that include the “Kick-off” party and LLT membership will go on sale in the fall. Tickets for individual plays will cost 200 pesos and 250 pesos for the musical.

ASA

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will meet Monday, April 2, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (Calle 16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic).

The speaker will be recognized artist and author Janice Kimball, owner of the Aztec art and weaving studios in Ajijic. She will be reading excerpts from two chapters of her new novel, “Three in a Cage.” The book speaks of the perils of bird smuggling, of mental illness and running an art gallery and the courage it takes to be different.

Benefit Operation Feed

San Juan Cosala jewelry artist Joyce Simmons of J’s Jewels will hold her fifth annual jewelry show and sale on Thursday, April 4. 

This year Joyce has earmarked a generous portion of the sale proceeds to Operation Feed in San Juan Cosala.  Founded in 1994, Operation Feed provides approximately 75 families with weekly food packages of rice, beans, pasta, oats and cooking oil.  Every peso donated to Operation Feed is spent on food for distribution to those in dire need.  This program is funded and operated entirely from volunteer donations.

CASA

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) held its monthly meeting and competition on March 11.

They celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with Irish Main Dish for Category A and Pies and Tarts in Category B. The judges were Nancy Creevan, Doug Findley and Andres Gomez Ibarra.

CASA’s guest speaker was Mary Bernadette McCann, who spoke in her lovely Irish brogue about growing  up in Ireland alongside her  “colorful” family members, She regaled CASA members with anecdotes of how wonderful it was to sit with family and friends around the fireplace singing and telling stories. 

Winners in Category A were: first place, Monica Molloy for her Irish Oats, Salmon & Crab Cakes; second place, Pam Ladd for her Guinness Braised Lamb Pie; third place, Sally Myers for her Donegal Fish Pie. 

Winners in Category B were: first place, Mary Ann Waite for her Kumquat & Blueberry Tarts; second place, Hazel Tash for her Chocolate Orange Tart; third place, Rick Feldmann for his Caramel Apple Cream Cheese Pie. 

People’s choice awards went to Beth Cathcart for her Guinness Beef Pie with Pastry in Category A and to Feldmann in Category B. 

CASA is offering a new award for best presentation in each category.  Winners in the presentation category were Molloy in Category A and to Waite in Category B.

Book signing

Zofia Barisas has an upcoming book presentation on Wednesday, March 27, 11:30 a.m., at the Oasis Cloud in Riberas del Pilar. Lunch will be available following the reading. There will be a menu choice of arrachera, chicken or vegetarian entrees at a cost of 80 pesos.

Barisas’ book, “The Woman Who Thought She Loved Men,” is now available on Kindle and Amazon and in Ajijic at Diane Pearl’s, Oasis Cloud, La Prensa Francesa, Coffee & Bagel, La Nueva Posada, the Plaza Bugambilia bookstore.
