Bus crash in Nayarit kills 25, 30 injured

Twenty-five people were killed when a bus full of tourists from Chihuahua plunged into a ravine in Nayarit early last Friday morning.

The Express Oro Tours bus was en route to the coastal resort of Rincon de Guayabitos when the accident occurred at about 4 a.m. on a stretch of highway between the towns of Puente de Chapalilla and Tequepexpan.

Officials in Nayarit said 24 people died, but the Chihuahua government said 25 bodies were being returned to the northern state. Another 30 were injured and treated at different hospitals in Nayarit. Of these, 15 had been released by Sunday.

Heavy rains during the night were cited as a possible cause of the accident, while Nayarit authorites said the bus was doing 100 kilometers per hour on a stretch of road with a 60-kilometer-per-hour speed limit. The Chihuahua Ministry of Transport and Communications (SCT) also noted that there were 55 people on board, 10 more than the legal capacity of the bus.
