Mexico’s lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, passed President Felipe Calderon’s controversial labor reform bill last Saturday.
The bill, which would restrict labor lawsuits, regulate outsourcing and make it easier for employers to hire and fire workers, must now get through the Senate before Calderon can sign it into law.
Having blocked any clauses that would have affected its trade union support base, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has backed the bill, with only Mexico’s leftist parties now opposing it.
