Climate turns nasty: Tapatios feel cold snap

Temperatures plummeted in Jalisco and across much of Mexico this week as an arctic air mass strangled the northern and central regions of the country.

The lowest temperature in Jalisco – 0.5 degrees Celsius – was registered Tuesday near Lagos de Moreno in the farming region known as Los Altos.

As dawn approached on Wednesday, the mercury dipped below 4 degrees Celsius in several municipalities, including Mezquitic, Colotlan, Teocaltiche, Jalostotitlan and Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos.

The lowest temperature recorded in Guadalajara was 5 degrees Celsius in the Colomos Park, although most parts of the metro area hovered between 7 and 8 degrees.

The effects of the cold air mass were felt more harshly elsewhere in Mexico.  A reading of minus 9 degrees Celsius was registered in the municipality of Delicias in the state of Chihuahua.
