Canadian killed during Melaque robbery

A Canadian visitor has been shot to death during a home invasion in the coastal town of Melaque in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The victim has been named as Robin Wood, 68, a resident of Salt Spring Island, British Colombia, who was visiting his friend Arvid Chalmers, a realtor also from Salt Spring who owns a vacation home in the resort.

According to local reports, the pair had returned to Chalmers' home in the Villa Obregon neighborhood of Melaque after attending a benefit concert in La Manzanilla, about 20 miles up the coast.

Reports suggest that at around 1 a.m. two masked men suddenly appeared inside the property, running down the stairs and threatening Chalmers and Wood.

Wood became upset when one of the men tried to grab two of his travel bags. He was shot after becoming involved in a scuffle with the gunman, reports say.
