Local beauty queen makes TV soap debut

Guadalajara’s Ximena Navarrete, who won the Miss Universe crown in 2010, has branched out into the world of acting and is appearing in her first telenovela (TV soap).

Navarrete, 25, takes the leading role in “La Tempestad” (The Tempest), which began airing this week at prime time (9:15 p.m.) weekdays on Televisa’s popular “Canal de las Estrellas” (Channel 2).

The former beauty queen received mixed reviews for the first episodes as her portrayal of Marina, a business executive who is forced to give up her career and return to her home town.

Cuban-born heartthrob William Levy plays Navarrete’s love interest and the soap’s theme is sung by Alejandro Fernandez and Christina Aguilera.

During her one-year reign as Miss Universe, Navarrete traveled to Spain, Indonesia, China, France, India, Russia, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, Thailand, Brazil, Guatemala, Chile and Bahamas, in addition to numerous trips around the United States, as well as Mexico.
