Chapala Red Cross offers handy medical info kit

In the interest of saving lives and assuring the best possible care for patients facing medical emergencies, Cruz Roja Chapala’s International Volunteers committee (CRIVC) has developed a handy and low-cost Medical Information Kit that can serve as a vital guide for first responders and doctors.

The kit is comprised of a two-page bilingual personal information form, a labeled plastic jar for storing the paperwork and a refrigerator magnet with the local Cruz Roja emergency telephone number. The jar should be kept inside your refrigerator where it can be easily located by a family members or first responders who will look for the magnet if called to your home.

CRIVC president Margy Kassier explains that the kit is designed to accommodate information for one individual in every participating household, including the person’s name, age and gender appearing on the label, along with the inside form containing essential data such as regular medications, chronic ailments and allergies. The bilingual form provides paramedics and doctors with quick answers to important questions that may arise, overcoming communication barriers that can crop up due to incapacitation or language issues.

The kits were introduced to the public on January 15 during the CRIVC’s monthly meeting held at the Lake Chapala Society gazebo. The persons who were present got a step-by-step walk through on how to properly fill out the information form.

The event served to launch an on-going promotion campaign aimed at supplying the kits to all interested foreigners and nationals residing in the area. The cost of each life-saver package is just 20 pesos covering the cost of the materials.

Kassier says she is willing and eager to arrange for guided presentations to local subdivision and condo home-owner organizations and other lakeside area groups.
