Chapala traffic bosses address the woes of expat drivers

Foreigners who want to avoid hassles with Lakeside area traffic police should be careful to obey the rules of the road, keep all essential permits and paperwork up to date and carry original documents whenever they get behind the wheel.
That was the upshot of the June 14 face-to-face meeting between Transito officials and approximately 60 active members of the Lake Chapala Society.
The gathering was put together by LCS Executive Director Terry Vidal and Community Relations Committee Chairwoman Andy Houk as the first in a series of discussions on topics of interest to the expatriate community. Attending on behalf of Jalisco’s Policia Vial (traffic police) were Juan Pablo Serrano, chief inspector for the interior of the state, and Alberto Alvarez, commandant for the Lake Chapala region.
Serrano was explicit on his interpretations of Jalisco traffic laws and regulations. Key points to be remembered by expatriates who drive foreign-plated cars include the following:
