Facharte working to brighten up lakeside streets

Carole Stern, who lives in Plaza de Toros in Chapala, suggested to her neighbor that Facharte paint her business’ facade.

Working with well-known local artist Victor Alcazar this time, brightly colored whimsical chairs were painted on the cement bench outside of the boutique Aranza. The transformation included painting the doors and adding decorative lettering to compliment the finished project.

Photographer and artist Jaime Barbiery coined the word Facharte (facade + arte) in 2010 to promote and coordinate an effort by Ajijic’s town hall to beauty the pueblo in time for the country’s bicentennial. Using several local artists, most of the murals that came to life then — artistically decorating the facades of businesses, homes, garage doors, doorways, rocks, telephone poles and trees — are still in place.
