Hot action is on the horizon, with the 36th annual Mexican National Chili Cook-Off ready to rock February 14, 15 and 16 at the Tobolandia water park grounds. Gates open daily at 11 a.m. to welcome crowds for culinary competitions and a full day of stage shows, food, drink and shopping market stalls of more than 100 vendors offering assorted goods and services.

The early numbers are in. The 36th Mexican National Chili Cookoff pulled in 3,745 visitors for three straight days of food and fun, named nine winners in food and drink competitions, and relied on 500 volunteers and vendors working the fairgrounds each day to keep things hopping.

Chapala’s 2014 beauty pageant circuit gets under way Saturday, February 8 with the Nuestra Belleza (Our Beauty) competition to be held at the Auditorio de la Ribera. The event is open to the public, scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. A nominal admission fee of 50 pesos per person to cover production costs is payable at the door.

El Piano Rojo was jam-packed last Sunday, as the grapevine had worked overtime following the previous night’s performance by Dame Edna impersonator, Michael L. Walters. So many turned out for the second and final show that the performance was delayed while additional seating was brought in.
