St. Mark’s

St. Mark’s Anglican Church is hosting an Ecumenical Festival featuring lessons and carols on Sunday, December 11, 5 p.m.

This celebration of Christmas music and readings will include the participation of guests from several different local Christian communities. Everyone is invited.

St. Mark’s is located at Chichimecas 836, corner of Blvd. Aztecas, in Fraccionamiento Terrazas Monraz.

Nativity

The traditional life-size Christmas nativity scene (nacimiento) went up this week in the Plaza de la Liberacion behind the Cathedral. This is the 54th consecutive year the tableaux depicting the birth of Jesus has been mounted in
the large central plaza.

Posada

The American Society is celebrating the yuletide season in festive style on Saturday, September 17 with a “Posada Luncheon” at the clubhouse in Colonia Chapalita.

On hand will be the choir from the Salvation Army Hogar de Niños children’s home in Tlaquepaque to sing Christmas favorites (see story page 3). The menu will feature roast pork, green beans, scalloped potatoes, salad and dessert. Doors (and the bar)  open noon and the lunch is served at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets cost 179 pesos for Amsoc members and 199 pesos for everyone else. Children pay 89 pesos. They are available at the Amsoc clubhouse, Avenida San Francisco 3332, Colonia Chapalita. Call (33) 3121-2395 for more information.

Zoo

If you’re heading to the Guadalajara Zoo before Sunday, December 18, take a toy (that doesn’t require batteries) along with you and children can enter for free.

The toys will be distributed to children’s shelters around the state just prior to Christmas.

DIF Jalisco is organizing the project and hopes to gather 5,000 toys to give away to children in need.

The large and well-laid-out city zoo is open daily from Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Avenida Paseo del Zoologico 600 and Calzada Independencia 4510.  For more information call (33) 3674-4488.

Amnesty anniversary

Amnesty International will mark 50 years of hard work in defense of human rights with a celebration in downtown Guadalajara on Saturday. Founded half a century ago, Amnesty has been working in Mexico for 40 years to make human rights a reality. The celebration takes place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on December 10 in Plaza Fundadores (behind the Teatro Degollado) in the historic center.

Tonala ceramics

Ceramics by 15 celebrated artisans from Tonala will be displayed in an exhibition/sale at Guadalajara’s Mueso de la Ciudad from Friday, December 9 through Sunday, December 11. The pieces will all be on sale at affordable prices. The museum is located at Calle Independencia 684, on the corner with Mariano Barcenas. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. on Sunday.

Comics convention

Don your capes and masks, for this weekend the Expo Guadalajara (Mariano Otero and Av. las Rosas) will play host to the annual Con Comics convention. Considered the most important comic book, anime and science fiction gig in Mexico, it takes place Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11. Tickets cost 70 pesos, or 100 for VIP entry.
