Thursday recitals
Guadalajara city hall opens up its council chamber to invited musicians, choirs and groups.  The free performances start at 8 p.m. and are free of charge. Unfortunately, the program is often released too late for this newspaper to publish.  One confirmed date is March 27, when Ari Omar Jiménez performs oriental music.
Presidencia Municipal (downtown Guadalajara), Thursdays, 8 p.m. Free. Just turn up.

Folk dance
The accomplished municipal-sponsored Ballet Folklorico de Guadalajara celebrates its 30th anniversary with a series of performances over the next few months.

The New York Metropolitan Opera season continues with a simulcast of Massenet’s “Werther.”

Tenor Jorge Taddeo and pianist Andrés Sarre interpret music by Antón García Abril in the third of this month’s free classical recitals.

Chamber music
The Orquesta de Cámara Higinio Ruvalcaba, directed by Vladimir Milchtein and Konstantin Zioumbilov, along with invited guitarist Fernando Cornejo interpret works by Jalisco composers Manuel Cerda and Blas Galindo, as well as Ramón Noble and Gerardo Tamez form the State of Hidalgo.

Fiesta de la Música
Several blocks of Avenida Chapultepec are closed to traffic to make way for stages featuring bands playing a mix of salsa, rock, reggae and ska. There will also be a stage for children’s music and activities.

Tuesday Music & Opera
Iranian-American classical guitarist Lily Afshar plays pieces by Bach, Brouwer and Castelnouovo-Tedesco, as well as her own compositions. Afshar won the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist and was was among 12 guitarists selected to play for Andrés Segovia in his master classes held at the University of Southern California.

Orquesta Sinfónica de Zapopan
Directed by Guillermo Salvador, the orchestra performs the world premiere of the sound track of the movie “12 segundos” by Giancarlo Liano that is being screened in the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
