Dance company gets reprieve

The state-funded Compañía de Danza Clásica y Neoclásica de Jalisco has been given a stay of execution but the troupe will change its name to the Joven Ballet de Jalisco (Young Ballet of Jalisco).

After director Guillermo Hernandez was released in March and salaries of dancers went unpaid, many in the local dance community feared that the professional troupe’s days were numbered.

In announcing the image and name change Monday, Jalisco Culture Secretary Myriam Vachez also revealed that the troupe will benefit from an improved budget of five million pesos a year. She also announced an improved budget of five million pesos a year. 

Vachez wants the new troupe to widen its reach, giving more performances and incorporating  modern works into its repertoire. The ultimate aim is for the group to become self-financing, she said.

In addition, new auditions will be held for all 18 places, including four soloists and 14 members of the corps.

The  Joven Ballet de Jalisco will only employ dancers aged between 18 and 28. Salaries start at 10,000 pesos, rising to 20,000 for the top soloists.
