Ballet star to grace Degollado

On July 7 and 8, Guadalajara ballet fans will get a second chance to marvel at the talents of Elisa Carrillo Cabrera, the Mexican-born first ballerina at the Berlin Opera Ballet (Staatsballett Berlin).

Carrillo appeared with the company’s principal dancer Mikhail Kaniskin at the Degollado Theater during last year’s Pan American Games cultural festival.

Kaniskin will again be accompanying Carrillo to Guadalajara, along with other dancers from the Berlin-based troupe.

Also taking part in the gala performance will be dancers from the Compañia Estatal de Danza Clasica y Neoclasica de Jalisco (State Dance Company).

The program will feature some of ballet’s most classic pieces, including the “Pas de Deux” from “The Nutcracker” and the “Pas de Six” from “La Vivandiere.”

Born in 1981 in Texcoco, State of Mexico, Carrillo studied at the Escuela Nacional de Danza Clasica de Mexico from 1990 to 1997. In 1999 she obtained a scholarship to continue her studies at 1999 the National English Ballet School in London.

In May 2010, the federal Chamber of Deputies designated Carrillo as a Mexican ambassador of culture.  The Berlin Opera Ballet named her first ballerina in June 2011.

The concerts at the Teatro Degollado on Saturday, July 7, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 8, 6 p.m. are sponsored by Jalisco’s Culture Secretariat.  Tickets are available at the theater box office or from Ticketmaster.
