The merchandising of national pride

The Universidad de Guadalajara, in conjunction with Mexico City’s Museo de Estanquillo, has brought part of a private collection belonging to the late writer and intellectual Carlos Monsivais to Guadalajara’s Casa Vallarta Cultural Center.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1910, the “Mercadotecnica Patria” exhibition features 401 works, including photographs, oil paintings, engravings, lithographs, ornamental plates, books, tickets and invitations to the celebrations, and other artifacts from the centenary era.

Casa Vallarta Cultural Center, Avenida Vallarta 1668, until January 15, 2012. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
