Pan Am Games cost just under 500 million bucks
Friday, February 24 2012 11:09

The Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games came at a total cost of 6.231 billion pesos (485 million dollars), the head of the Organizing Committee (COPAG) announced this week.

The expenditure included 2.5 billion pesos on sporting infrastructure, 317 million on sports equipment, 154 million in urban infrastructure, 1.06 billion on promotion, and 2.1 billion on logistical operations, revealed COPAG boss Carlos Andrade Garin. One billion pesosĀ  of the total was covered by sponsors, 170 million by metro-area municipal governments and 2.3 billion each from the state and federal governments.

Andrade sought to play down the figure, suggesting it was little compared to the costs of previous games. The figure represents just over a quarter of the amount spent on the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, which was equivalent to 24 billion pesos, he claimed.
