The United States tops the medal table with four golds and two silvers after day one of the Guadalajara 2011 Parapan American Games, while Brazil follows close behind with four golds and four bronzes. Canada claimed the competition’s first gold in the cycling, before the United States finished first in two consecutive races. Mexico meanwhile had much to cheer after a fruitful first day in the pool. The hosts climbed to third in the medal table with two golds, four silvers and one bronze, all won in the swimming before a sell-out crowd at the Scotiabank Aquatics Center. But Brazil leapfrogged the hosts to second place by winning three golds of their own in the swimming. In the opening men’s goalball fixtures Argentina beat El Salvador 20-10, Team USA and Canada tied in a 5-5 thriller and Brazil defeated Mexico 6-3. In the men’s wheelchair basketball Canada beat Colombia 57-38 while Mexico thrashed El Salvador 82-23. The women’s competition saw Argentina overcome El Salvador 41-32 and Canada defeat Brazil 67-49, while the United States hammered Peru 61-10 and Mexico trounced Guatemala 77-17.
