Mexico enjoyed its best day yet at the Pan Am Games on Thursday, collecting nine gold medals to move to fourth in the standings behind the United States, Brazil and Cuba.  Team USA also won nine golds, while Canada's sole win came in a sensational penalty shootout in the women's soccer final against Brazil at the Omnilife Stadium.

Five of Mexico's golds came in basque pelota, two in the diving competition, one in athletics and one in artistic gymnastics.

On the track, Marisol Romero won her second gold of the games in the women's 10,000 meters, four days after winning the 5,000-meter race.

Daniel Corral won the men's pommel horse medal at the Nissan Gymnastics Center, while in the diving pool Paola Espinosa and Tatiana Ortiz won the women's synchronized ten-meter platform and Yahel Castillo the men's three-meter springboard.

Team USA moved further ahead in the medal stales after also grabbing nine gold medals on Thursday.

U.S. gymnasts collected gold in the women's uneven bars and vault (Bridgette Caquatto and Brandi Jay), and the men's rings (Brandon Wynn).

Alicia Deshasier won the women's javelin event, Kayla Harrison the gold in the 78-kilogram women's  judo category, and Elizabeth Johnson in women's singles bowling at the Bolerama Tapatia.

The United States also fared well in team events, pocketing golds in the women's team foil and men's team epée fencing finals, the women's K1 500-canoeing final on Lake Zapotlan, as well as in the team show jumping competition at the Guadalajara Country Club.

Brazil were leading Canada 1-0 in the women's soccer final with two minutes on the clock when Canadian team captain Christine Sinclair scored a tying goal.  The game went into overtime but neither side could score a goal.

Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc saved two of Brazil's penalty kicks in the shootout to give Canada a thrilling 4-3 victory.
