Golden day for US, Mexico in tennis, archery
Saturday, October 22 2011 09:13

Mexico returned to winning ways in Friday's Pan Am schedule, picking up gold medals in squash, tennis and archery, as Team USA increased its haul of gold medals to 41.

Victories in the men's team squash, tennis mixed doubles and women's team archery finals took Mexico's gold tally to 12, while Canada won the women’s squash title, as well as the synchronized swimming free routine team final.

The swimming competition in the much lauded Scotiabank Aquatics Center finished Friday with wins for Lara Jackson of the United States in the women's 50 meters freestyle and Brazil's Thiago Pereiera in the men's 200 meters backstroke.  The two 4x100 meters medley relay finals were shared between the United States (women's) and Brazil (men's).

Of the 32 gold medals awarded over the seven days in the pool, the United States and Brazil won 28 – 18 and 10 respectively. But while all of Brazil's swimmers will be London bound next year, few on the U.S. team can be assured of a place on the Olympic squad.

In the women's tennis final, Irina Falconi of the United States (ranked four in the U.S. and 77th by the WTA) beat Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 6-3, 6-2, although her partnership with Christina McHale came up short in the doubles and the pair had to be content with the silver medal after losing to Argentine duo Maria Irigoyen and Florencia Molinero.

Other gold medals for the United States Friday came at the shooting range in the women's skeet and men's 50-meter finals. And the men's archery team also won gold, as did Connor Fields in the men's BMX cycling final.
