The surprise package Sunday was the performance of Brazil's swimmers who won three of the five finals in the pool. The United States bagged four golds on the second day of competition, Mexico two and Canada one. The United States' Catherine Breed stormed to victory in the 200 meters freestyle and Rachel Bootsma won the women's 100 meters backstroke. But Brazil's world record holder Cesar Ciel won the 100 meters freestyle, Felipe Franca the 100 meters backstroke and the Brazilian foursome edged the United States in the 4x100 meters freestyle relay. Other medals At the shooting range, Canada's Dorothy Ludwig won the 10-meter air pistol shooting event, which earned her a place on Canada's team for the London Olympics. Ludwig, whose husband is back home caring for their six-month-old son, was visibly overcome with emotion after her triumph. Her first Pan American Games medal, she paid special tribute to her father whom she said taught her the discipline. Meanwhile, Daryl Szarenski of the United States won the men's pistol event – his third consecutive Pan American Games gold medal. “It was a good match,” said Szarenski. “I am proud to have won an Olympic quota for my country and I would like to thank the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program and Team USA for supporting me and giving me the opportunity to win.” And the U.S. dressage team won its fourth consecutive Pan Am team gold medal at the Guadalajara Country Club. Their combined average score of 74.421% left them well clear of the Canadians, who won the silver with a combined average of 70.413%. Mexico won two gold medals Sunday. They came from Irma Contreras in taekwondo and Óscar Soto in the men's pentathlon.
