The president of the Pan American Sports Organization has put an end to speculation that the opening ceremony might be postponed, confirming that it will go ahead as planned on Friday night.

Despite heavy rain in Guadalajara over the past two days, Mario Vazquez Raña said “today there is no way to change the day or time of the opening ceremony,” which will take place at the Omnilife Stadium from 8 p.m. Friday.

The rain has largely eased off now. Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez said further showers would not spoil the event, but admitted he had been worried by the possibility of strong winds. “Tomorrow you will see why,” he said, alluding to a surprise planned for the inaugural event.
