Quirarte quits after Chivas lose again

Fernando Quirate resigned as coach of Guadalajara Chivas after his side suffered a third consecutive defeat to Tijuana on Saturday, making this the club’s worst ever start to a season.

Quirarte, nicknamed the Sheriff, handed in his resignation to sporting director Rafael Ortega following the 2-0 loss to Tijuana at the Omnilife Stadium on Saturday.

“I’m stepping aside because I haven’t reversed the results and because I love this club. I hope the person who comes (in my place) can do what I couldn’t,” Quirarte told reporters after the game.

A Guadalajara native, Quirarte played for Chivas in the 1980s and also made the national team, scoring twice in the 1986 World Cup. He lasted just three months as manager, having only been appointed in October.

Chivas finished last season in top position but were eliminated by Queretaro in the first round of the playoffs. They are now bottom of the league, which is currently being propped up by all three Guadalajara sides.

The local teams have made a disastrous start to the Clausura 2012. Chivas are still in search of their first point, while relegation rivals Estudiantes Tecos and Atlas, second and third from bottom respectively, have picked up just one point apiece from their first three games.

Tecos earned a 1-1 draw against America on Friday, but Atlas were beaten 2-1 in Queretaro the following day.
