They came to see Joe Montana, but they would have to wait a while longer.
Modelo sponsored the Televisa broadcast from Calle 2 near Auditorio Telmex in the north of the city, where Montana, famed retired NFL quarterback, made his public appearance.
A crowd of fanatics gathered Saturday for the unique event. In a concrete field walled in and overhung with whitewashed steel beams and grey clouds, a few thousand milled about. Some nursed beers, everyone waded in a stream of repetitive pop music, and most made their way up the little hill to the games. There they tried their hands (and feet) at precision passing, the long ball, pull-ups, and field goal kicks—all in the name of football, American football.
They knew it was just the preamble to meeting Joe, but each of those little challenges mattered. Only winners of each got the opportunity for an autograph from the legendary quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers and (more briefly) the Kansas City Chiefs.
The place was ready. There were Joe Montana cardboard cutouts, Joe Montana posters, Joe Montana facts hung from the steel beams. Someone with a microphone started a Joe Montana chant.
Contingents of the crowd roamed together wearing matching jerseys. Not number 16, not with the name “Montana” printed on the back though.
