Tigres will take on Santos in the final of Mexico’s Apertura 2011 this week, after both sides triumphed in their respective second-leg semifinals at the weekend.
The two sets of games offered contrasting levels of entertainment, with Tigres, from Monterrey, sealing their place in the final with a 1-0 win over Queretaro on Sunday.
A bizarre own-goal from Queretaro defender Manuel Lopez handed Tigres victory, following a dull goalless draw in the first leg last Thursday.
In a thoroughly more exciting contest, Santos, from Torreon, progressed to the final after drawing 4-4 with Morelia on aggregate. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Santos racked up a three-goal lead on Saturday, before Morelia brought it back to 3-2 with two late goals.
With the score level after both legs, Santos went through because they finished above Morelia in the regular season table.
The final will be Santos’ third in the last four tournaments, while Tigres are aiming to win the title for the first time since 1982. The first leg takes place in Torreon on Thursday at 8.30 p.m., with the return game in Monterrey on Sunday at 6 p.m.
