Golf stars anticipate LPGA Tour’s most popular tournament

Enthusiastic crowds are expected to turn out for the fourth LPGA Lorena Ochoa Invitational next weekend even through Ochoa, who is expecting her first child in December, won’t be playing.

As in previous years, the world’s top 30 female golfers will battle for a one-million dollar purse at the Guadalajara Country Club  from November 10-13.

World number one Yani Tseng of Taiwan will be joined by the likes of Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Juli Inkster, Suzann Pettersen and Catriona Matthew, as well as former winners Angela Stanford (2008), Michelle Wie (2009) and In-Kyung Kim (2010).

Ochoa, who turns 30 two days after the event, retired from the LPGA in May 2010 at the top of her career but is still held in great esteem by everyone on the LPGA tour.

The annual tournament in Guadalajara has become one of the most popular among players on the tour, partly for the warmth and passion of the crowds. Players have commented that they especially like the beautifully manicured course where former world number one Ochoa learned her golf from the age of three.

A percentage of the proceeds from the event are destined for the Lorena Ochoa Foundation that helps with the education of underprivileged children and runs a school in the La Barranca neighborhood of Guadalajara.

Three Mexican golfers have been invited to join the star-studded field: Sophia Sheridan, Lili Alvarez and the amateur Regina Plasencia.

Many expatriate residents and golfing enthusiasts from the Lake Chapala will again be providing their services as stewards at the tournament.

Ochoa, who will be present throughout the week, will give a free golf clinic on Tuesday, November 8, 4:30 p.m. The Wednesday Pro-Am tees off at 7:15 a.m.

The Thursday, Friday and Saturday tee time is 10:50 a.m.  The final round on Sunday, November 13 tees off at 9:50 a.m.  The prize-giving ceremony will be held at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Tickets for play on Thursday and Friday cost 100 pesos. Saturday’s tickets are 300 pesos and Sunday’s 400 pesos.  A weekly pass costs 800 pesos. They can be purchased on the day at the Country Club gate (Mar Egeo 260, one block from Av. Avila Camacho, Colonia Country Club), or  ahead of time at the office of Grupo Ochoa, Morelos 2179, Colonia Arcos (behind Plaza Los Arcos), Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  For further information call (33) 3817-2858 or visit www.loi.mx.
