The Mexican national soccer team squandered a golden opportunity to beat ten-man Brazil on Tuesday night, surrendering a one-goal lead and ultimately succumbing to a 2-1 defeat in the Corona Stadium in Torreon.
It may have been scheduled as a friendly but the game was anything but, with Brazilian right-back Dani Alves earning himself an early bath by clattering into Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez in the penalty area late in the first-half. Having already been booked, the Barcelona player duly received his marching orders.
By then Mexico already led 1-0 due to an own goal by Brazilian defender David Luiz in the tenth minute. Andres Guardado then missed the opportunity to double El Tri’s lead when his spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Jefferson.
Despite being a man down, Brazil rallied in the second half. With just ten minutes remaining the visitors drew level in spectacular fashion, when the legendary Ronaldinho curled a beautiful free-kick into the top-right hand corner of the goal.
Four minutes later, Marcelo burst forward to seal the win for Brazil. The Real Madrid left-back beat several defenders before firing past goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez, who was playing his 100th and final game for the Mexican national side.
