The political buzz is starting to crank up with the U.S. presidential election a mere three months away. Many American (and other) expats in Mexico will keenly follow the campaigns of incumbent president Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney all the way down to the wire. Both Democrat and Republican supporters will be actively canvassing the vote, especially in the Lake Chapala area. The Reporter will also be shadowing the build up to November’s election and is committed to giving both sides of the political divide equal opportunity to express their views. In this edition we begin publishing the first of a series of editorials on key campaign issues penned by local political activists. This week it’s the turn of Democrats Abroad; in our next edition the Lakeside Tea Party will give their response.

The Supreme Court’s decision upholding the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) was a big win for the middle class. It was a big win for seniors, students, children with preexisting conditions, and the uninsured – in fact, for almost everybody.
But Mitt Romney and Republicans are spinning and trying to scare people with their distortions. It’s shameful. So here are some of the facts:
1. Will I lose my Medicare coverage?
No. Medicare will be strengthened in these ways:
· Free preventative services.
· Lower drug costs for seniors who are in the coverage gap known as the “donut hole.”
· Cost controls that crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse while providing new protections for seniors.
2. Isn’t there a huge new tax on the middle class?
No. The Affordable Care Act lowers taxes on the middle class. For example, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that 19 million people will receive tax credits — worth an average of about $4,800 each — to help afford health care.*Restricted Article* - To view rest of this content, please login or register..
