“The city is buzzing but the jury is still out” was how one U.S. reporter described to me the mood in London, just over 24 hours before the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
On a rare vacation to my birth city, I experienced the “pre-game” excitement of the world’s largest sporting extravaganza first-hand Thursday as the famed torch was relayed through the hallowed streets of Central London, packed with I-phone proficient denizens of many nations – friendly Tapatios included, as I had the good fortune to meet and greet. In the photograph above, a torchbearer (not a celebrity, I’m afraid) runs with the emblematic symbol along theaterland’s Shaftesbury Avenue – the Big Apple’s Broadway equivalent – before heading off to the cheering throngs packing Trafalger Square, Parliament Square and Hyde Park.
