Thousands evacuated after Colima Volcano lets off steam

Some 3,000 people were evacuated from the Nevado de Colima National Park on Sunday, following a minor eruption at the nearby Colima Volcano.

Agave concerns

Tequila prices could soon be on the rise, with 60 percent of the 14,500 registered agave cultivators having ceased production.

Tuberculosis up

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) recorded 1,193 cases of tuberculosis up until December 22 last year, a 17 percent rise on 2011.

Suicides up

More than 450 people took their own lives in Jalisco in 2012, 17 percent more than in 2011. Research from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) indicated that 56 percent of cases were linked to alcohol and drug abuse, which can exacerbate feelings of depression.

More blood banks

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) will open 24 new blood banks in municipalities outside of the Guadalajara metropolitan zone in January, in order to decentralize reserves across the state. 

Governor signs state budget

Governor Emilio Gonzalez resisted the temptation to veto the State Congress’ budget that had prompted a default on 1.4 billion pesos of debt incurred from hosting the 2011 Pan American Games.
