Tequila prices could soon be on the rise, with 60 percent of the 14,500 registered agave cultivators having ceased production.
The decline is the result of a surplus recorded eight years ago, which proved costly for growers and caused many to abandon cultivation, according to the Council of Blue Agave Farmers in Jalisco. With just 20,000 hectares of agave currently being farmed, the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) has said that 45 to 50 million agaves must be planted to avoid another deficit next year.
