Blood banks to open in rural areas

The State Blood Transfusion Center (CETS) is to open 16 blood banks in municipalities across Jalisco before the end of 2012.

“In the second half of the year we will put centers in places like San Miguel el Alto and Huejuquilla, where there are more indigenous people,” said CETS Director Blanca Estel Salazar. These new centers stocked with blood would help doctors cope with emergency situations, reducing the time it takes for blood transfusions and boosting patients’ survival chances.

Around 1.3 percent of Mexico’s population donates blood.
