To celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on Thursday, May 17, Guadalajara’s LGBT community paid tribute to local homosexual icons at the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres in the historic city center, next to the Cathedral.
Among those honored were Juan Soriano, an acclaimed Guadalajara-born artist, the poet Elias Nandino, and Pepe Guizar, composer of the famous mariachi song, “Guadalajara, Guadalajara.”
A silent march in protest against homophobia took place at 6 p.m., going from the Cabañas Institute to the Plaza de Armas.
Jalisco is home to one of Mexico’s biggest homosexual populations, with thriving gay scenes in both Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
