Temperatures soar but rain is on its way

Slap on sunscreen and drink plenty of water, for the hot season is here with a vengeance. Temperatures reached a scorching 43 Celsius (°C) (109.4 Fahrenheit) last week in Santa Rosa, Amatitan, less then 50 kilometers north of Guadalajara.

The highest temperature recorded in the Guadalajara metropolitan zone was 36.5 C (97.7 F) on Thursday, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua). Jalisco’s northern and southern extremities experienced the hottest conditions in general, with thermometers reading over 40 C (104 F) in several areas.

The good news is there will be no repeat of last year’s underwhelming rainy season, with abundant downpours predicted for the coming months.

This year’s temporada de lluvias – forecast to start on schedule around the middle of June – will bring 20 percent more rain than average to the central and southern areas of the state, while the coastal region will receive 50 percent more precipitation than normal, according to a forecast issued this week by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA). The rest of Jalisco should expect average conditions, meaning little chance of serious drought or flooding.
