Regional Teachers Union (SNTE) leaders have criticized a new anti-bullying law because is seeks to burden teachers with additional responsibilities.
The Jalisco State Congress is debating reforms to Eduction law that would make teachers largely responsible for preventing bullying in schools and sanction them if they fail to report any incidents they witness.
“We can’t allow teachers, who in addition to being educators take on duties as psychologists and social workers, to also be police officers,” said SNTE Seccion 47 secretary general Guadalupe Madera Godoy.
Speaking to reporters, Madera said the health of 90 percent of public school teachers is already affected by their workloads.
While acknowledging that teachers need to “create a culture of prevention” that discourages bullying, Madera said this must be accomplished in partnership with parents.
“Bullying is also generated within the family, on the streets and in other places – we can only do the part that affects us,” she said.
