Stolen cell phones to be disabled

Cellular telephones reported stolen in Mexico will be blocked and unusable as of July 20.

The Department of Transport, the Federal Attorney General’s office (PGR) and telecommunications businesses Telcel, Telefonica, Iusacell and Nextel have all signed an agreement to reduce the use of stolen cellular telephones in criminal activities.

To report a phone stolen you must have the IMEI number located on the battery or the box your phone came in when you bought it. Alternatively, you can find out your number by calling *#06# on your cell phone.

To avoid being tagged as a criminal if someone uses your stolen cell phone, it is imperative that you find your IMEI number and store it in a place of safekeeping.
